This is the third book in the “Image” Series (book #1 Double Image, and book #2 After Image), and Ms. Roycraft has delighted this reader with another great read into the unique, and different world of vampires she has created.

Shelby Cort has moved from the big city to the lakefront town of Shadow Bay, and is now the new sheriff there. She has hopes that her life will be different now, better, as she concentrates on putting her past behind her and starting anew. Her first murder case in Shadow Bay starts the sequence of events that will change her life in ways she never thought possible --- for good or for bad.

Ricard De Chaux is the former ‘Paramount’, an ‘Overlord’, for the Undead in France. Like Shelby, he has moved to Shadow Bay in hopes of making his life different. Ric, so long isolated from the living, has decided it’s time to get back into the world of humans. Long ago, his special, unique vampire abilities earned him the name of ‘Doctor Death’ because he could heal or injure, even kill, with just the touch of his right hand.

Ric is now the new county Medical Examiner for Shadow Bay. He meets Shelby on the first murder scene he’s called to, and an instant, unwanted attraction springs up between them. Neither are prepared for the electrifying chemistry --- so undeniable and so instantaneous.

But Shelby and Ric have different reasons for investigating the murder (and the ones that follow), and neither are willing to let the other come between their search for answers.

Ms. Roycraft has written a book full of suspense, mystery, strong sensual tension, and a fascinating world of the vampire that is unlike any other. Shelby is a strong heroine, and Ric is as charismatic as he is dangerous. This reader eagerly looks forward to the fourth book, Immortal Image, due out in 2003. Recommended to fans of the vampire genre, and a note that even though the books are series, they can be read out of order.
