Toni Langston is in a heap of trouble, or so she thinks. Some months ago one of her room mates, Simon, comes home somewhat drunk; after he caught his fiancée in bed with another man. Simon shares his woes with Toni, and she ends up comforting him, where one thing leads to another.
Dumb man that he is calls out the cheating fiancée’s name before passing out, making Toni feel ashamed and knowing she has no chance with him. Add insult to injury, Simon doesn't recall their encounter the next morning.
The roommates Simon, A.J., along with Toni's brother Matt, and Toni live in Toni and Matt’s childhood home. The three men are firefighters and buddies from way back. They all treat Toni like a kid sister, especially Simon.
She and the roommates go on, and over the next several months or so she finally gets Simon's attention. Thanks to the help of another firefighter she recruits to make Simon jealous. Simon is upset when he learns that he is the father of Toni's baby because she hadn’t told him the truth.
Throughout the story, Toni is forced to come to grips with some life-altering changes. I liked her independence and resolute mind, but she still spazzed over Simon without demonstrating her feelings toward him. I had to wonder what Simon would have done she'd told him the next morning. I really liked the characters and their quick repartee.
