A few weeks ago, Drayton MacKenzie was an artillery captain, happily commanding his troops. Then one day, fate beckoned with a prestigious title, the promise of wealth and power. Surely he could handle becoming the Duke of Ryland, couldn’t he?
The inheritance is a bloody curse. Not only did the former duke spend every pound he could get his hands on, he flaunted his mistresses in front of his wealthy wife. The entailed properties are falling down with neglect, and Drayton’s promise of wealth depends on the successful fulfillment of an outrageous bequest. He has been charged with locating the old duke’s three illegitimate daughters. Once he has them in his keeping, he must prepare them for entrée into society and advantageous marriages.
Caroline Dutton has always known the circumstances of her birth. She has never let those facts stop her from fulfilling her dreams. Now she is a respectable dressmaker, with her own shop, and she hopes to make a good living at it. That is, until an arrogant man steps across the threshold and changes her life forever.
Her Scandalous Marriage is the debut novel of Leslie LaFoy’s new Victorian trilogy, and what a debut it is! Filled with the most diverse and intriguing characters, the novel offers readers the gamut of emotions. From laugh-out-loud scenes of domestic life run amok, to heart-stopping moments of quiet victories, the story’s quick pace and sharp wit are sure to entertain. Drayton is still learning how to be a duke, and his attempts at the perceived behavior of a duke are bemusing. Caroline is no innocent young girl, and she knows what she wants and what she won’t tolerate.
I am absolutely charmed by the three sisters, and cannot wait to see how their stories evolve in the coming books. There are several other characters who I hope to see again, too.
