Police officer Samantha Brownís murder investigation leads her to a goth nightclub and its owner, Lucan. Soon, more deaths happen, and they seem to somehow be linked to Lucan as well.

Lucan, former chief assassin of the Darkyn high lord Richard Tremayne and new suzerain to a yet-to-be-named jardin, finds himself in the middle of a police investigation. The fact that he seems to be a main suspect does not bother him, but the fact that the woman who is heading the investigation bears an uncanny resemblance to the love of his life, who happened to pass away over 200 years ago, is rather unsettling. Who is Samantha Brown?

Dark Need is the first book of Lynn Viehl's Darkyn series that I've read. I have to say that it is one remarkable and suspenseful paranormal romance. Now I understand why this series has become so popular in this category. The characters, particularly Lucan, are complex and well written. The author did an excellent job in weaving the veil of mystery around Lucan, and the suspense element is extremely well done. Samantha, the heroine, is smart and tough, yet vulnerable. She is perfect for Lucan, resisting him every step of the way. Lucan is dark and brooding. There are terrible secrets in his past and the reader canít help but feel both repelled and fascinated by him. Both the paranormal and the suspense elements are mixed perfectly well. There is a secondary plot running in this story involving characters from the previous books, which makes me believe that it is an ongoing one, and it will unravel at some point in a future book. This subplot links to the previous two books. Although Dark Need can be read as a stand-alone with no problems, I feel that it would be best to read the previous titles as well, in order to be able to put together all the pieces in the puzzle. Dark Need is a fascinating and enthralling suspense paranormal romance and I can barely wait to read the next book in Lynn Viehlís Darkyn series.
