When novelist Kate Madison moves back to Windy Creek after a bitter divorce, the last thing she excepts to be doing is tracking down her surrogate fatherís killer. Murder doesnít usually happen in the sleepy Montana town. Determined to find the person who murdered Harley Wilson, Kate sets out on her own murder investigation, much to the chagrin of the townís Sheriff, Steve Lambert.

Steve has been attracted to Kate since the day she moved back to Windy Creek. Refusing to act on his attraction due to Kateís indifference, Steve tries to suppress his feelings for her during the investigation. Thrown together, the powerful attraction between the two of them bubbles over into a passionate love affair.

When the killer starts stalking her, Kate is thrown into a real life murder mystery, and itís not like the one she writes about in novels. This one is very real and very, very deadly.

Dead of Winter is an engaging and suspenseful, Ďwho- done -ití romantic thriller. With likable characters in the form of the lead hero and heroine Steve and Kate, Patricia Parkinson surrounds the reader with quirky Montana personalities that only enrich the storyline of the novel. Set against the sweeping Montana scenery this book will keep the reader on the edge of their seat till the very last chapter. There is romance abound as Kate and Steve try to avoid the inevitable attraction. I found it highly refreshing and touching to read about the pain they had both experienced in previous marriages, this background only enhanced the main romance aspect of the novel.

The opening chapters of the book, however, didnít seem to grip me for some reason. With too much description and a floundering narrative, it felt as if Ms. Parkinson was trying to find her literary feet. Despite this, by the middle part of the book I was hooked. It became a case of eliminating the suspects along with Kate and Steve.

After the first few heavy chapters, Dead of Winter seduces you with itís grand scenery, engaging characters and gripping storyline. If you like some detective work with your romance, I recommend you to give Dead of Winter a read!
