Dallas, Texas is suffering a heat wave that no one has ever seen! Moreover, it has sent everyone home from work early – except for Elizabeth Major and Tom Quinlan.

Elizabeth had been studiously, and successfully, avoiding Tom for the past six months – since their one and only night together. Tom didn’t know what sent Elizabeth running from his bed… was it because she had too much fun? Was it because they made love five times in one night?! As much as it pained Tom, he respected Elizabeth’s decision for the time being and gave her her much-needed space.

But a blackout that came over half the nation unwittingly gave Tom the perfect setting for confronting Elizabeth. “Catching” her after work, Tom had timed his office exit flawlessly – easy to do when he works just next door! After half a year of giving her space, he had had enough! With the power off, the whole building (the whole city, for that matter) is deserted, and the security system had locked them both in – the only two people left in the building.

The story is short but wholly satisfying! It starts with Elizabeth and Tom having had a previous relationship that is suddenly cut off, only to be resumed dramatically. Who else but Linda Howard can write an intensely sexual and emotional relationship that takes place in one night?! (Okay, several nights – much to a reader’s delight, Ms. Howard’s alpha heroes never fail in the stamina department! [grin]) The intimacy of being disconnected from the whole world gave Tom and Elizabeth the “talk” that they sorely needed. Moreover, Tom, as Elizabeth is finally slowly finding out, is the one and only man who can breach her hard-earned defenses. Tom already knows that Elizabeth is his perfect mate; and with a carefully planned stratagem, he’ll convince her of that fact! It is so gratifying to see a man who knows what he wants and goes after it!

As with any of Ms. Howard’s stories, intimacy is the heart of any romantic relationship – and Tom and Elizabeth illustrate the point perfectly! Overload is coupled with Merline Lovelace’s If a Man Answers, in a 2-in-1 Silhouette book (see separate review of If a Man Answers) – both stories are excellent, highly recommended and well-worth the money!
