If there were an award for sexy titles, I’d have to nominate this book! Ripe with double entendres, it can refer to bounty hunter Austin Taggart’s chase of fugitive Maxie Maxwell, or the state in which he finds himself every time he gets within ten feet of her.
Maxie, of course, is innocent (aren’t they all?), and really doesn’t want to come back to Sedona with Austin!! In fact, she drugs him, dumps him headfirst into a bathtub, and sneaks out on him, just to avoid that very thing!! I have to wonder if there wasn’t some brain damage going on here, because Austin just keeps coming back for more.
Of course, Austin is the noble, high-minded guy – only doing this to get enough money to send his sister to art school in Paris (uh huh!!) and Maxie is only in trouble because she is trying to help her sister get her own bar started. So really, these are two amazingly good-hearted citizens who just happen to be caught at the wrong time in the wrong place!! Yeah right!
Well, luckily all this goodness and purity of motives is offset by the down and dirty deeds that Austin fantasizes doing with Maxie – and he fantasizes often enough that you have to wonder why the guy wears jeans – must be downright miserable most of the time!! Just when I started to like Maxie and Austin, they had to go and get sensitive on me and talk about their families and their past... Sometimes it’s better to go with down and dirty!!!
A lightweight read, two mostly entertaining people, and a rather contrived plot – not one for the keeper shelf, but a good pass-it-on summer read.
