As a cop’s wife, Claire Winslow knows that a knock on her door in the middle of the night can only bring bad news. But rather than news of her husband’s death, she's told he has been arrested for murder, and for conspiring to kill her. She doesn’t want to believe them, but when given damning proof, she has trouble refuting the evidence.

Claire moves to her recently purchased ranch, where she plans to use her horses to help rehabilitate injured children. When she stumbles across her husband, she’s afraid to hear his explanation, and doesn’t know if she should listen with her head, or with her heart. Her father and her friends believe in his guilt, but she finds it hard to completely accept that the man she loves is a killer. Yes, he’s been terribly depressed after a shooting in which his partner was killed, and where he also had to shoot a young boy. Yes, he’d been secretly gambling and is terribly in debt. But a killer? – she just doesn’t know.

Past crimes are brought to light as Claire tries to discover the truth. And more than once she finds herself in danger. Colleen Thompson has written a very engrossing story which you may find difficult to put down. Almost constant action is interspersed with an abundance of well-developed characters. Added in are plenty of theories and clues which leave us trying to solve the crimes right along with Claire. If you enjoy a good romantic suspense, then you certainly don’t want to miss The Deadliest Denial.
