Taking a nod from Taming of the Shrew, author Eloisa James acknowledges her literary roots with her latest novel, Kiss Me, Annabel. The Essex sisters are back in full force, with the widowed Imogen casting about for a lover, Tess in love with her husband, and Annabel hoping for a wealthy suitor of her own. After years of poverty, Annabel knows just what she wants in a husband. A pleasant face would be nice, a kind nature would be a plus, but wealth is absolutely required.
One of the newest gentlemen to attend the Season this year is the Earl of Ardmore. His rugged good looks and keen intellect mark him as no one to trifle with. He is in London for one reason, and one reason alone - to find a bride. When he spies the lovely Annabel, he is enchanted, but she wants none of it. She just escaped Scotland, and has no desire to return. Besides, Imogen has indicated that she may be interested in a dalliance with the handsome earl.
The comedy of errors that drive this novel are extremely entertaining. As you might imagine, things are never as they appear on the surface, and quite a few characters are in for some surprises. Annabel thinks she knows what she wants, but fate may have other plans. Lord Ardmore, Ewan Poley, is finding the women in London a bit more complex than the highland lasses back home. He has no idea what is in store.
This fast-paced novel is sharp-witted and as sparkling as a diamond. The Essex sisters are always entertaining when they are together, and this is no exception. They have added a few more interesting characters to their entourage as well. I have no doubt that we will see them gracing the pages of books to come.
