The magic is back at Eclipse Bay! I was enthralled with Jayne Ann Krentz’s third novel Summer in Eclipse Bay! I loved this book! It has all the magic of the first book; only the presentation is slightly different. Not so much danger, but plenty of mystery to solve, as is Ms. Krentz's style. The romance between Nick Harte and Octavia Brightwell is electric! The dialogue is intelligent and witty! This book constantly made me laugh. Many of the characters are reunited in this trilogy, and I am happy to say Winston makes plenty of appearances too! (For those of you haven’t read the other Eclipse novels, Winston is the loveable sidekick dog in the first novel that belonged to Hannah Harte.)
All the characters in this novel are well written, including the secondary characters. But the two most fascinating characters, of course, were the leading characters, Nick Harte and Octavia Brightwell.
Nick was sexy and Octavia was captivating and together they made the perfect couple! Nick was awestruck by her magic and called her his fairy queen, whenever he would discuss her in his most private thoughts. Octavia, although at first, scared to get involved with “Hard Hearted Harte”-or so the town rumor says, soon lets her guard down. She didn’t have a choice when Carson, Nick's five year old son, put in a good word for his dad. One date with Nick and Octavia’s life was forever changed. Although Octavia tried to convince herself it was a short-term affair ending with the summer, Nick was determined to have something more than just an affair. But even Nick couldn’t quite put his finger on what it was exactly that he wanted. On the road to discovery, he and Octavia would be sure to experience a lot of personal fireworks!
When the newly discovered painting, which happens to possibly be worth a bundle, is willed to AZ (Eclipse bay’s local conspiracy theorist), Vergil (The local porn shop proprietor), and the Heralds (the New age group running the best bakery in town - Incandescent Body) disappears, Nick finds himself dragged into investigating its disappearance. Because he is a mystery writer, everyone in this eccentric little group seems to think he is the man for the job. But because he is concerned for Octavia, Nick takes the job. Besides, in Nick’s mind, what good way to get even closer to Octavia?
Watching this little tale of romance and mystery unravel kept me turning the pages. Secondary characters like Mitchell Madison and Sulivan Harte, Jeremy Seaten and Gail Johnson were extraordinary. Getting to hear little tidbits of the lives of the characters from previous stories of Eclipse bay, made me feel like I was coming to a reunion. I got to see Rafe and Hannah, and Lillian and Gabe again. Awww - and all the warm and fuzzy feelings! If you loved the first Eclipse bay, you’ll really enjoy this novel. Have a fantastic read and be sure to enjoy your time in Eclipse Bay!
