Ever wonder how the church hymns you sing came to be? This new series, Music of the Heart, gives us the answer.

Finding Anna is the history of “It Is Well Within My Soul.” Horatio Gates Spafford wrote this hymn, this is his story to tell.

From all outward appearances Spafford and wife, Anna has everything a couple could hope to have. He is a successful businessman and attorney in Chicago, Anna is a homemaker, they are the parents of four great children. When the great Chicago fire of 1871 started, it nearly destroyed everything they had.

After the fire, they try to get on with their lives, Spafford helps with the rebuilding of Chicago, much of what we see today. Anna helps those who have lost everything; she houses them, feeds them, and clothes them. During this period both their faiths are tested to the limit.

When a family tragedy happens, their faith is tested even more. It is the faith these two people have which will keep each of them believing there is hope.

I was wowed with Finding Anna. It was interesting to find out how the hymn came to be. The strength of their faith was amazing to read about. They were put in terrible situations, which would test everyone’s faith. I highly recommend this book. The next book in the series The Longing Season will be available July, 2006. The Longing Season is about the hymn Amazing Grace.
