Author Carolyn Jewel pens the next installment of the Crimson City series with a look into the dark world of demons. CCPD Officer Claudia Donovan grew up in the cityís roughest neighborhood, and only her driving determination to escape her roots has allowed her to become a respected policewoman. With skills honed on the streets, Claudia is focused on one thing - making a better life for her daughter, Holly, no matter what the sacrifice.
When she investigates what appears to be a double murder, Claudia encounters Tiberiu Korzha, notorious among vampire and human alike. He says that he had nothing to do with the victims, but he is a vampire and cannot be trusted. Itís a shame, really, that all that potent masculinity is wasted on someone like him, but Claudia tamps down her interest and gets back to work. She has to move quickly before the B-Ops team supercedes her authority on the case.
When the B-Ops team arrives, Claudia is grudgingly prepared to relinquish her investigation. But things go from bad to worse in a heartbeat. There are demons loose in the city, and it appears that the special forces team has been compromised. Claudia, Tiberiu and even little Holly are not safe from this new threat.
A Darker Crimson lives up to itís name. This segment of the bigger story is filled with danger and foreboding. Claudia must make some difficult decisions about who to trust, and how much she is willing to give up to survive. This book has some uncomfortable moments, including some paranormal compulsion sex that left me feeling used, yet the episode is completely within the bounds of the plot. Ms. Jewel has carried on the spirit of the series, and left us eager to see the final books.
