Clay is the next of the “Lousiana Gentlemen” to spring from the fertile imagination of Jennifer Blake. And before I forget, it’s important to mention that every reader should check the last pages of Ms. Blake’s novels – she will often include some recipes from the novel you’ve just finished, and if you like Cajun cooking, these are highly recommended.
Well, enough with the food critic, and back to the review. Loner by nature, and bayou-lover by choice, Clay Benedict doesn’t expect to find himself captured and held in chains by a lovely widow and her young daughter! Clearly, Janna Kerr is in trouble, but she won’t tell Clay how holding him prisoner is going to help. Equally clearly, her eight-year-old daughter, Lainey, is ill, but once again, Janna is tight-lipped. So he settles down to his enforced captivity to wait and watch and learn what is driving this beautiful woman – and incidentally to become enchanted with her and her daughter at the same time!
Clay is every bit a “Jennifer Blake” hero – handsome, sexy, brooding occasionally, and devoted to his beliefs of family values and fair play. No wonder Janna starts having trouble keeping her thoughts where they should be when she’s getting “those” steamy looks from a pair of midnight black eyes!!! The plot in this novel, however, is the weak point – concerning a black market organ donor organization, it is horribly easy to punch holes through any of the scenes where the ‘bad guys’ are featured, and to definitely want to kick Janna in the jambalaya to get her back on track!! However, it is a testament to the incredibly skilled writing of Jennifer Blake that none of this matters in the least! What matters is: when is Clay going to get Janna into bed?? And will he be able to sort out the tangle she’s made of her life?
In spite of the implausibility of the plot and the general nastiness of the villains, this book features such a strong hero, that we are forced to keep turning those pages and waiting, along with Janna, for the moment Clay’s lips touch hers, and the fireworks explode!!!
It may not be the best book Ms. Blake has ever written, but her fans will lap it up, and even if you’re not a fan, this is a great example of her sensual style and her bayou boys!!
