Marissa Jamison is just putting the pieces of her life back together after the unexpected murder of her fireman husband. His life insurance policy has allowed her to open the lamp shop that together they had been saving for. Her kids, while still mourning their dad, are active with extracurricular activities. For the most part, most days, Marissa would say they are happy.
However, when Marissa finds out that a woman she had a brief but ugly encounter with at the local ballpark is now dead, things take a sinister twist. As much as Marissa would like to call the incident a coincidence, another body turns up dead. Once again, the person has had contact with Marissa recently that wasn't quite pleasant. Then Marissa starts getting late night phone calls that no one can trace and soon she's terrified for her own life and that of her children. It seems that everyone she encounters could be a suspect even her old flame Alex Kincaid who has become a part of her life again.
Meanwhile when the killer is not knocking off anyone that hurts Marissa, he is also working to create the perfect home for his soon to be perfect family. His plan is coming together beautifully as he has been watching them long enough to know all their likes and dislikes. He just knows that soon he’ll have what he’s always wanted – a perfect family of his own.
After anxiously anticipating this newest book by Cassidy, I was for the most part pleasantly entertained. I found the storyline while not completely unique was one that held my attention although at times I was wishing for a bit more nail biting suspense. While the romance between Marissa and Alex is secondary to the murder investigation, it still plays an important part in this story, as Alex wants to step in and protect Marissa and her children. Since Marissa and Alex knew each other as teens, the story doesn't feel rushed at all when they take things a step further and Alex ends up moving in to protect everyone. I anticipate that Ms. Cassidy will find her books on the bestseller lists in years to come.
