Lynn White thinks she know what her godfather, Jonas, does for a living. She uses her extraordinary abilities to help recover stolen artifacts and priceless paintings. He keeps her isolated from the world and friends. As a child, she accepted the security his protectiveness gave her, but now that she’s an adult, she longs for freedom.
She’s never allowed herself to be interested in a man because of her secret activities for Jonas. Nick Barnes is the head of security for her godfather and she’s finding the attraction she feels for him is a little unnerving. She’s willing to risk Jonas’ wrath to investigate the feelings she and Nick have for each other.
It’s on one of her recovery missions that Lynn learns she’s on the FBI most wanted list and that her godfather has been lying to her all of her life. She’s not sure who to trust when the truth comes out and her illusions are shattered. It seems like everyone has been using her for their own gain. How can she trust a man she is falling in love with to keep her safe when he’s been lying to her as well? Should she leave with the mysterious woman who claims to be her sister? Will she be able to find the truth in the tangled web of lies her life has come?
Carla Cassidy’s contribution to the Bombshell Athena Force miniseries is a fast paced intriguing story. The reader is able to watch the development of Lynn from a naïve girl to a self-assured woman. She might not know who she truly is, but she knows her place in the world. There could have been more detailed descriptions of her abilities. Nick feels more like a secondary character than her love interest.
Deceived is interesting story about a woman trying to find a world she’ll fit in. I’m intrigued enough by the women’s enhanced abilities to read the next installment in this miniseries.
