When cartographer Cindy Frier and news producer Jack Stratton meet at a friend’s Christmas party, the attraction is instantaneous. What could only be a mere flirtation of strangers becomes a combining of hearts for two people destined to be together.

Five years down the road when the couple has finally settled into one household and Jack has obtained the position of his dreams, Cindy is forced down by a terminal illness. Rather than struggle aimlessly in denial, Cindy bravely follows her life’s course. And in doing so, she teaches Jack and those who love her about a forever State of Happiness.

Duffy hits a triple homer with this one! State of Happiness is the best reason in the world to use that buy one get one free tissue coupon. This novel is so moving that in between sobs, you’ll rethink every thing you’ve ever thought about life and loving.

Cindy is one of the most likeable characters to hit print in a longtime. When she falls ill, it is like watching a sister in pain. Her strength and determination in the face of adversity is part of what makes State of Happiness such a reflective and poignant love story.

Another aspect which makes this story so captivating is Cindy’s unique perspective on life in general. How she is capable of recognizing and vividly describing the fact that the course of each person’s life is affected to some extent by their choices is a fine testament to Stella Duffy’s exceptional writing talent.

This reviewer cannot wait for Duffy’s next novel. This is one Stella who definitely has her groove on.
