Assistant District Attorney Sydney Cooper has left her stressful job behind for the day and is planning on going home where she can finish last minute preparations for her trip to Cancun. However after checking her voicemail, she realizes once again her plans will have to be put on hold. Her best friend Lily Gilmore, a reporter for the Philadelphia Sun, has left her a message asking only that she meet her at a diner that is a couple hours away.

Sydney finally arrives at the diner, and just as she spots Lily, a van speeds up and two men grab her friend and take off. Sydney attempts to grab onto the back of the van in the hopes of opening the door but is knocked to the ground and left unconscious. Sydney is left with the unwelcome job of telling Lily’s mother what has happened. When she finds out that Lily had left her young daughter with a friend,Sydney cannot help but wonder what is really going on.

Sydney will end up meeting Jake Sloan, who has relocated to Philadelphia in order to be near his dad who is dying of cancer. However the much darker reason that he has left Louisiana for Pennsylvania is so that he can help FBI agent Paul Ramirez in his quest to catch Victor van Heusan, a former military comrade of Jake who is now suspected of selling illegal arms.

Sydney is starting to have serious feelings for Jake, but a small part of her brain is concerned that he may be one of the bad guys. As the danger and suspense mount, so will the romance.

Fans of extreme romantic suspense or military romances will be very pleased with Heggan’s newest book, The Search, but it was a bit too heavy for me. Although packed with action and romance, at times the plot was a bit hard to believe
