Philippa Meredith is distraught when the man she is going to marry, Giles FitzHugh, tells her he can`t marry her because of God. He is going to become a priest. Philippa just can`t believe this! He would abandon her for God? Everyone just assumed they would marry one day, even though there was no formal betrothal.

Philippa is a Lady-in-Waiting in the court of Queen Katherine of Aragon. Philippa is worried that her Mother, Rosamund Bolton, who was also in the same court as her daughter, will make her come back to Friarsgate Manor, which Philippa does not want to happen. Philippa starts flirting with all the men at court, which is a very dangerous thing to do.

She meets Crispin St. Clair, the Earl of Witton. He ignites in Philippa a passion that will not be denied. The Earl far exceeds any quality which Giles had. She unintentionally stumbles upon a plot to assassinate King Henry VIII, she must do something. Phillipa and the Earl try to uncover and unmask the individuals who would attempt such a terrible plot.

Will they succeed? Will their affection for each other blossom? Will they lose their lives?

I enjoyed this book on several levels. There are some very funny lines in this book. Philippa is no one’s fool, she has a mind of her own, which was nothing to have back in 1519 in any country.

The author Bertrice Small is a very talented author. Her loyal readers will gobble Phillipa up.
