Annette Blair brings us a sweet, fun Christmas romance that is sure to warm your heart.
Ashford Blackburne needs to marry, and he needs to marry fast. Not only that, but his, still unknown bride, needs to be pregnant by Christmas or he will lose his grandfather’s inheritance. Having been stood-up at the altar by his first intended, he hires someone to be his bride, but when she stands him up too, he goes on a drunken slump with his friends and winds up gambling what money he has left. But when he enters into a game of chance with the proprietor, little does Ashford know, but he is going to win himself a wife.
Larkin McAdams can’t believe her eyes. The one man that she has loved her whole life is actually gambling with her father and losing very badly. She knows that her father is cheating, but dares not say anything, especially as she’s hiding behind the stairs and no one can see her, much less hear her. When Ash is down to his last shilling, her father places another bet on the table; Ash can have his daughter if he loses. Outraged, Lark almost gives herself and her hiding place away, but her deepest fantasy and dream is to be Ash’s wife. Still, what could a gutter rat ever offer to a rich, rogue like Ashford Blackburne? Not that Lark has a choice now, with her father’s ruffians pointing a gun at them both and a preacher in front of them.
Needless to say, Ash ends up with Lark, and that’s when the fun starts. Lark is just what she said she is, a gutter rat and she smells worse than that! Ash takes her to his home, cleans her up a bit and tries to make a lady out of her. But can he make a purse out of a sow’s ear? And what about getting her pregnant by Christmas, he hasn’t even told her that part yet. As times goes on and they get to know one another better, Ash and Lark come to some kind of agreement, but neither one of them ever expected to fall in love.
Annette Blair knows how to write a story that takes the reader away for a while. Her characters are very well written and their personalities jump from the pages. Add in a meddling grandfather and an over bearing father, along with a few other interesting characters, and you have the making of a wonderful story. If you’re looking for a hot and steamy romance, then this is not for you, but if you want a nice, easy read that will warm your heart, then I highly recommend A Christmas Baby.
