“He Said Never!” How many times have we heard a man say that - especially about marriage - and Viscount Rathbone is no different! In Patricia Waddell’s newest novel, He Said Never, Viscount Rathbone meets his match in Prudence Tamhill, the ward of the powerful Duke of Worley. Prudence understands that she is expected to get married, and the sooner the better as far as her family is concerned. However, she has other plans; she has discovered she just might be illegitimate and is on a quest to discover the identify of her natural father.
Rathbone also has no desire to marry. He enjoys his Casanova-like reputation a little too much and has no intention of settling down. However, when a wager goes wrong and results in him compromising Prudence,he knows he must do the right thing and propose marriage. This marriage is hardly smooth sailing. Together they must try and make the best of a marriage that neither wanted; and in the process they just might discover love after all.
He Said Never is a wonderful historical romance that uses the rule of a very restricted society to demonstrate how strange and wonderful love can be. Waddell’s characters sparkle with life as they step from the pages of her novel into the mind of the reader. The love story is intimate and touching with a sweet overtone that makes the story a pleasant read. However, I did find the mystery of the missing father to be slightly overplayed and a little boring. Overall, He Said Never is an enchanting read that sweeps the reader into historical London and the life of the Ton. If you like the Regency period that this wonderful novel is a surefire winner for you !
