Monica Albright has decided to become a Big Sister. She is about to meet her little sister, Ann Small, Ann is 14, her Mother has passed away, her Father is so busy working he does not have time for her, and Ann is also pregnant.
Monica was adopted as a baby by a caring and loving family. She wants to give Ann some of the love she has felt all her life. When she meets Annís dad, Richard, they donít agree on a lot of things, Richard has doubts Monica is the right choice for Ann. He thinks Monica is trying to interfere with his raising his daughter. He is angry, hurt, and somewhat in love with Monica. Monica also feels maybe she is not the right choice, she has some strong feelings about Richard, some good, some not so good.
Richard is still grieving for his wife, who has passed away from cancer. He is struggling to make ends meet, it seems like all he is doing is working, he does not have time for his daughter, Ann, they are always arguing, fighting, it seems like he has forgotten how to be a father, which is why he decided to find a Big Sister for Ann, he thinks Ann needs a female in her live. When Ann tells him she is pregnant, he is not all that happy with that bit of news. If his wife was alive she would know what to do.
Monica and Richard know they will have to hide their true feelings from Ann. Richard does not want Ann to think he loves her less just because he loves Monica. Monica does not want Ann to think she does not want to be her big sister if she finds out she is in love with her dad.
As you progress through the story, you can see changes happening to Monica, Richard and Ann. They all struggle with the fact they want to belong to someone. Ann realizes she does belong to someone, her Dad and Monica. This is a book to give to someone who has suffered with secret pain, to let them know its okay, everything will be alright.
