Readers first met hero Nicholai Vaux as a secondary character in Ms. Leto’s Surrender (Essence of Midnight Anthology). Freed from his imprisonment as a ghost, Nicholai has spent his time adjusting to the world. The last thing he expected was to suddenly find the reincarnation of his wife. Over a century ago, she had been murdered and Nicholai had been accused. Now, he’s determined to convince Danielle Stone (a secondary character in Ms. Leto’s Up To No Good, August 2003 Blaze title) that’s she’s his Sophie and they’re meant to be together for eternity.
Danielle finds herself attracted to Nick but doesn’t want to be. When he finally tells her about Sophie, she at first doubts his sanity. But then, she starts doubting her own because she begins to have ‘visions’ of Sophie’s life with Nick.
While the ‘destined soul mates’ feelings between Danielle and Nick grow stronger, (aided by the magical perfume bottle) a dangerous threat is making itself known. Someone is out to destroy everything Danielle has, even at the cost of her life. Nick suspects it’s the reincarnation of Sophie’s murderer, but doesn’t know ‘who’ it is in this life.
Danger looms, accidents are happening, and it’s a race against time to discover the identity of the reincarnated soul out to make sure Nicholai Vaux doesn’t have a second chance to claim his long lost love.
This was a fast paced read, and the love between Nick and Danielle was very emotional. The story reached a tense, tell-all climax that was very satisfactory. And, readers will no doubt be left hoping Ms. Leto has plans to write Nick’s cousin, Alexis, her own love story, continuing with the magical perfume bottle that seems to have an agenda all its own.
