In the city that doesn’t sleep, there are strange creatures that walk the night. These beings would just as soon kill you as look at you. Those are just the drug dealers that flood the city with their illegal gifts. But someone has arrived in the city that will begin to serve vengeance on those who sell the mind destroying drugs.

Tessa Van Doren has come to New York, looking for peace. Her heart and soul are sore from wandering the earth for hundreds of years. Having been a vampire for all those years, she has seen many friends die. But it is the loss of her lover, Hsu, in Shanghai in 1911 that has set her feet upon the path of destruction she has in mind.

Tessa hunts out the drug dealers, murderers and rapists that have made New York their home. As they begin to disappear, the police start noticing. Detective Anthony Flynn is suspicious about the club that Tessa owns. He knows anyone who is anybody comes to Tessa’s club to see and be seen. He believes the club is a façade for drugs. Tessa is amused. To think that she would condone any sort of drug use anywhere near her. She also has the means to ‘sniff’ out evil.

Then a new designer drug appears. It’s called Shanghai Red, the color of blood. Tessa knows that whomever is manufacturing the drug is doing it to get her attention. An old enemy has arrived in the city and he’s looking to have Tessa again. Tessa will find out that the friendships she has made will help save her from him.

Erica Orloff has written a great action adventure with a heroine who can definitely take care of herself. Tessa is strong, not just physically, but mentally. Her heart has taken some hits, but she has the courage to reach out again. Flynn is a marvelous hero. His almost immediate acceptance of vampires is a bit of a stretch for a practical minded cop. Flynn seems willing to trust that Tessa can deal with the trouble, but he’s there to back her up when she needs him. The story moves fast. The secondary characters are entertaining as well.

Urban Legend, by Erica Orloff is a rollicking tale of vampires and revenge. Tessa and Flynn shows that love will make us stronger than being alone.
