I was first introduced to Susan May Warren’s work when a friend recommended her book Happily Ever After to Me and shortly after starting it, I was blown away. I have been an inspirational reader for years but no book has touched me in quite the way this one did. Susan’s knowledge of the bible, her faith in God and her powerful use of words was enough to have me carrying the memory of the story with me for weeks. I was more than thrilled to have the chance to review her third and newest book.
In this newest book, we return to the town of Deep Haven – home of the ever-popular Footsteps Of Heaven bookstore where this time we get a closer look at the towns pastor and volunteer firefighter Dan Matthews. By the way did I also mention handsome? The book starts off fast and furious with Dan and the Deep Haven crew fighting a full-blown house fire with residents trapped inside. A job like this is always made more personal when you know the victims inside and Dan is determined to save the Downs baby and her two younger brothers before they succumb to the deadly smoke. It is only when Dan is thrown from the roof that he finds himself looking into the eyes of a short and spunky angel named Ellie Karlson.
He soon finds out that Ellie is not a woman to be rescued but a woman who is out to save the world as the new interim fire chief. Ellie has had her share of skepticism in her job and she refuses to back down to anyone even when it becomes obvious that an arsonist is threatening Deep Haven’s entire town. After an apology on his part and some strong determination, he and Ellie become friends even though Dan would certainly like to be much more. Ellie however is determined not to get involved with one of her staff.
As the story progresses you will soon learn what makes Ellie’s heart so tough to pierce. You’ll watch Dan do his best to prove to her that he’s willing to not only love her but also allow her to do her job. As Ellie battles to find out who it is that is out to destroy not only her reputation but the town as well, she’ll realize that she can’t fight her true feelings.
So take a run – not a walk to your nearest Christian bookstore and grab a copy of this book. Be sure to visit some of the other residents of Deep Haven that we’ve met in the past. Stop by the bookstore for a cup of coffee and a look around. Before you leave, you might even get to attend a wedding of some familiar characters. This is one summer book that will be sure to please.
My salvation and my honor come from God alone. He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me.
