Daniel Connelly is the eldest son of the former princess of Altaria who had shucked her throne for love and marriage to an American entrepreneur. Not that she regretted it, but as the accidental death of her beloved father and brother occur, Daniel becomes the rightful heir, and thus King of Altaria.

Being born and bred in America, with visits to Altaria in between, Daniel had never expected to inherit a kingdom. Altarian officials are aware of Daniel's lack of knowledge in palace protocol and sends Erin Lawrence, Altaria's prim, proper and beautiful royal etiquette and palace liaison, to instruct Daniel on the finer points of kingly manners.
The romance between Erin and Daniel is lovely. Erin gets an eye-opener on American etiquette - mainly in public display of affection and local meals (Chicago hot dogs and pizza being the King's preferred repast!), while Daniel enthusiastically learns how to seduce the buttoned-up Erin! The secondary characters, mainly the rest of the Connelly clan and some questionable palace officials, aren't wasted in the story. They provide a background to Daniel's character and explain Erin's own behavior. There's also a side plot, however, that is continuing throughout the series as it is left unresolved in the book - the death of the previous king and his son. The "assassination" plot in this book isn't quite hashed out - more like an introduction to the characters and the circumstances that bring them together (aside from the familial relations!). While it might be disappointing to some who expect a resolution, it certainly makes one look forward to the rest of the series!
As Leanne Banks is one of the staple writers in category books, expect Tall, Dark and Royal to be a good read.
