Fans of military romances will want to get their hands on this new American romance by Bonnie Gardner. Not only is this a military romance, it is also a story of wounded characters that have a long road ahead of them before they can find a happily-ever-after ending.

Patsy Prichard, also known as “Prickly Prichard”, has no intentions of offering her heart up to be broken again. She spends her days working as a nurse at a local Air Force base and fighting off the advances of any man who gets in her way. Patsy’s great-aunt Myrtle has other ideas in mind. She knows it will just take the right man to open up her niece’s heart. Myrtle hopes that Raymond Darling is that man when she buys him at a bachelor auction as a special present for her niece.

Normally, Ray would have nothing to do with a celebrity auction. However, he knows this one is for a good cause. After he gets over the shock of seeing a much older woman buy his time, Ray becomes even more shocked to hear why she did and for whom. Ray has enough problems of his own to deal with, he is not so sure he can break past Pasty’s prickly exterior to find the woman within.

Although this is my first book by Ms. Gardner, the book leads us to believe that some characters are also connected to Gardner’s previous books, which should be a draw for some fans. I often have trouble with characters that tend to bicker back and forth throughout the book before coming to a mutual agreement. Unfortunately, Sergeant Darling has its share of petty arguments and misunderstandings. Those who are willing to look behind that should find this a very enjoyable read.
