Kathleen Carmody and her family have left the familiarity and security of their home in Indiana to go to Woodbridge, NY where Kathleenís husband Matt has found a new job. No one in Kathleenís family has any idea of the many secrets from her childhood. She has kept them hidden since she left this area of NY years ago. However circumstances are better this time around and Kathleen and her children will have all she ever wanted for them Ė a beautiful home in a safe neighborhood or will they?
When a girl that looks almost identical to Kathleenís thirteen-year-old daughter Jen disappears on her short walk home from work, everyone in the neighborhood is talking. Is this neighborhood as safe as they thought? Then Jen gets involved with a less than desirable boy at school and soon his body will be found with a bullet hole through the head. Jen herself will start seeing faces staring at her in windows and be convinced that people are following her.
Jenís life will never be the same once she discovers a secret about her parentage. A secret that her mother has kept for years. How many people has Kathleenís secret affected and how many people know the real truth about her and her daughter? She begins to wonder if all the strange happenings are all linked to her less than perfect childhood and the choices she made and even if they are Ė why would anyone possibly want Jen dead?
If there is any suspense book that Iíll recommend to my friends this summer, it will be this one. Wendy Corsi Staub has a way of creating an unusual story and then twisting and weaving her way to a climatic ending that will leave you wondering how you never figured it out yourself. Be prepared to lose sleep over this particular book, as it will be hard to put it down until youíve reached the ending.
