Marcus Ridley, Viscount of Fairfax, has been fending off marriage for quite some time. Once and again more than one lady has tried to put him in a compromising position, to force him to marry them, but to no avail. Marcus` opinion of most women is not positive at all, he wants to find a woman who will love him, not his title.
Clarissa Carter, daughter of the Fairfax`s steward has no suitors. Clarissa is well aware of the fact that her height and lack of beauty added to her independent spirit...not to mention an overbearing mother, certainly do not help. Besides, she does want a love match rather than a marriage of convenience.
When Marcus meets Clarissa again after several years, he barely recognizes her. However, they rekindle their friendship and soon, Marcus` mother takes a liking to the young lady and she ends up becoming a companion to Lady Fairfax. Slowly, and after Clarissa saves him from yet another attempt at compromising him, Marcus realizes what Clarissa truly means to him.
Mona Prevel`s The Love-Shy Lord is a charming and engaging Regency historical romance. The plot of this book moves quickly and both main and secondary characters are nicely drawn and engaging. Although the interaction between Marcus and Clarissa is not extraordinarily intense, or at least not as intense as I prefer main characters interaction to be, it did not detract from my enjoyment of the story. The Love-Shy Lord is filled with witty dialogue and a delightful sense of humor that reminded me of Jane Austen. This book is suitable for romance lovers of any age and I certainly recommend it.
