For over 200 years Narcissus has been a statue. When the one person who considered him a friend comes to the park, her heart broken, he can not stand watching it without doing something. Asking Aphrodite`s intervention, he accepts the Goddess` long-standing offer under his own terms. Aphrodite grants him two days to learn what love is as he helps out the sad young woman that he has watched since she was but a child.
A few days after being dumped by her boyfriend on the same day she told him she had been fired, Violet ran to the park in despair. For years she had visited the park and spoken to her favorite statue, a statue of Narcissus, telling him about her dreams and her woes. As she is sitting on a bench, a beautiful man approaches her, telling her that he is the statue of Narcissus...her favorite statue...the statue that she considered a friend...come to life. Something compels her to believe him, and she brings him home.
Cricket Starr`s Violet Among the Roses is a beautifully engaging tale. Ms. Starr successfully weaves the myth of Narcissus into this romantic story. The plot is moving and poignant, but it is also sprinkled with a charming sense of humor. As Narcissus discovers how much the world has changed over the centuries, the reader can not help but feel his wonder. Both main characters are nicely drawn. I was moved by Narcissus' need to help the woman that considered him a friend even when she perceived him to be nothing more than a statue. His feelings for Violet are tender and true, and despite the fact that he knows that their time will be short, he is willing to have what little he can get, because he will be sharing that time with her. Violet is a sweet young woman down on her luck who has yet to learn her own worth. She is Narcissus` perfect match and together they grow. What is supposed to be a journey of sexual discovery for Narcissus turns out to be one of emotional discovery as well. I found Violet Among The Roses to be a truly delightful and emotional read. I am certainly looking forward to Ms. Starr's future work.
