An Affair Most Wicked is the second book in the trilogy of the Wilson sisters who take London by storm to find a husband. Oh he doesn’t have to be titled, per Clara, but it doesn’t hurt if he is.
Clara meets a wicked, witty and devilishly handsome man at her “so-called” first night out in the season. The only problem being that she went to the wrong ball, she attended the wrong ball and she didn’t know the man behind the mask because no introductions were made. But he soon set her on the right path and she left, only to make it to the correct ball an hour later than planned.
Seger, Marquess of Rawdon, doesn’t attend the polite society balls but the most wicked ones there are, the Cakras Balls. Let’s just say that wicked is the correct word and that is why the people are masked to hide their identity. Oh he wears the mask, but it doesn’t really hide who he is to the people that know him. Seger is renowned for his sexual appetite and his lovemaking skills.
Clara thinks about the masked man all the time and is always looking for him wherever she goes. He never seems to be anywhere, so what does one do, but attend another Cakras Ball in the hopes of meeting the man again. Clara does and she leaves Seger shocked as to why she appeared at another one of these balls when he told her last time to leave and never come back. The attraction between Clara and Seger is definitely ablaze every time they meet, no matter where they are. The flirtatious attraction doesn’t stop when they're not together either, but keeps right on going. If you have read the blurb then you know what I am talking about.
Clara and Seger both have a troubled past. Can the two of them move on from their past and make a future with each other? Can Clara trust Seger? Can Seger trust Clara after she doesn’t tell him the whole truth about her past? Seger’s stepmother, Quintina, and his cousin Gillian are out to destroy the fragile bond that is growing between Clara and Seger. But can Seger see clearly to what they are trying to do before it is too late?
An Affair Most Wicked is a fast paced story that will have you turning the pages until the wee hours of the night. The story is full of sexual tension, escapades and adventures all rolled into one. The book also lets us see the struggles of Clara and Seger as well as how they come to care deeply for one another. We can’t forget the villains in the story, Quintina and Gillian, and the lies and deceit they go to, to fulfill Quintina’s plan for Gillian. I liked the way at the beginning of most chapters that there was a short snippet of letters between Clara and her sister Adele.
An Affair Most Wicked can be read as a stand-alone book, but it would be much better if you read To Marry The Duke, which is Sophia’s story. This trilogy by Ms. MacLean is not to be missed. If you are looking to escape from the real world for a few hours with a fun, heartwarming book filled with sexual tension and adventure then this book is for you. I can’t wait to see what Ms. MacLean has in store for Adele, Sophie and Clara’s younger sister when she makes her debut in London society.
