The cover says it all...”A little romance you can sink your teeth into.” With her first book in the Family Argeneau series, author Lynsay Sands stakes the romance industry and its readers with a sharpened pencil. This lovingly satirical look at publishing brings us a new appreciation for the process.
Luc Argeneau is an author. Largely known for his historical treatises, he has recently branched out into fiction, where his alter ego, Luke Amirault, has found surprising success. Reclusive by nature, he cannot understand why his new editor is pestering him to promote his books. He doesn’t see what all the fuss is about. He has only written some biographical books about his family. Of course, stories about how his family finds love are categorized as paranormal romance - they are vampires, after all.
Kate Leever is at her wits' end. She had sent regular letters, registered letters and overnight letters to Lucern Argeneau, asking for some promotional assistance. He remains unresponsive. Her final assault involves meeting the reclusive author in person and winning his participation through sheer stubbornness. She doesn’t expect to find him so interesting....or strange. His work habits are nocturnal, he has a hereditary allergy to the sun, and he is rude. Her persistence pays off in spades when he finally agrees to do one promotional event for her - “the RT thing”. He thinks it is a book signing - but we all know better, don’t we?
At this point, I began laughing out loud while reading and never stopped until the end of the book. Kate and Luc are engaging characters, but the author truly shines while she is skewering the marketing side of romance publishing, and the love-obsessed fans who share the spotlight. As the main story shifts to a Romantic Times convention and all of the madness involved, the readers are in for a treat. We are given a glimpse into the event, from all sides - the readers, the authors and the publishers. This book’s release is perfectly timed to set the stage for the October real-life gathering.
Single White Vampire is a keeper, and I cannot wait for the next book in the series, Love Bites!
