Written with a modern “gothic feel”, this newest book by Ms. Thayne is a suspenseful page-turner, with a romance that sizzles with sexual tension, and a wonderful “feel good” storyline that will leave readers sighing in contentment when finished reading.

Ten years ago Sophie Beaumont’s sister married Peter Canfield, and during that time she had an all-too-brief affair with Peter’s brother Thomas. Under unwilling circumstances that she couldn’t explain to Thomas, Sophie abruptly left to pursue a career as a photographer. Now, ten years later she’s famous and has traveled the world over. And now --- she’s returning back to Monterey, California for the funeral of her sister and brother in law. In shock at the sudden accidental death of her sister, Sophie is left reeling when she realizes that she’s all her sister’s children have left for security; herself --- and the love-of-her-life Thomas Canfield.

Thomas Canfield is just as unprepared for the shocking turn of events involving his brother and sister in law as Sophie is. On leave from the Coast Guard, Thomas steps immediately, albeit unwillingly, into his dead brother’s shoes to keep the family estate and business running. Like Sophie, he’s left realizing that Peter and Shelley’s children need him now, and he’s going to have to make some very important decisions that will change his and their lives.

But there’s a mystery behind the supposedly accidental deaths of Peter and Shelley, and the FBI are involved. When strange things start happening around the Canfield estate, and an unknown danger surrounds them, Thomas and Sophie close a protective circle around the children and find they are drawn closer together too.

Sophie never wants to tell Thomas the reason behind her abrupt departure ten years ago and for that reason she’ll feels she’ll never have a chance with him again. But Thomas wants the truth, and he’s more than determined to bring closure --- or a new beginning --- to the affair they briefly had all those years ago.

Amidst the danger and mystery now surrounding them and the children, will Sophie and Thomas have the chance to find out their true feelings for each other and be able to put the past behind them? Will the undeniable attraction between them be enough to resolve past issues and have a future together? Or will they successfully fight their feelings and bond together only for the sake of the children?

Another great read by Ms. Thayne! This reviewer loved the “gothic feel” with the mystery and danger that surrounded the characters; it made the romantic suspense even more intriguing. And the wonderful “feel good” storyline with Thomas and Sophie’s protective, loving unity with the children was just the right touch to this book. A definite recommend.
