Love in Bloom's is the first book that I have read by Judith Arnold. I am now on the hunt for others by this author. I found this to be a charming, light-hearted romp which places emphasis on the love of family, food, and yes, New York!
We first meet Julia Bloom as she is summoned by Grandma Ida to Grandma`s residence atop the Bloom`s delicatessen, a New York institution run by the Bloom family for three generations. Due to the death one year ago of Julia`s father, Ben Bloom, who was cut down in his prime by a tainted sturgeon, Grandma Ida has decided to appoint Julia, a promising young attorney, as the new President of Bloom`s. Taken aback, Julia confers with free-spirited sister Susie who convinces Julia to take the job on an interim basis until they can prove to Grandma that it is their Mom, Sondra, who should really be the new President since she has really been running Bloom`s from behind the scenes for years, along with their Dad.
This plan might have worked if it weren`t for a certain sexy investigative reporter researching a story on the financial well-being of Bloom`s without Ben Bloom at the helm -- a sexy reporter who`s asking, and getting, more answers about what is going on at Bloom`s than Julia herself. Also, there`s the problem of missing bagels and other gourmet goodies that disappear on a weekly basis to contend with, not to mention an uncle who tries to undermine Julia at every turn when he`s not on the golf course, and a pushy, albeit loving, mother who wants Julia`s job for herself.
All in all, this story is much more than a romance which it is and well done, but also a little mystery, a family struggle with love at the center, and an appreciation of good food, Manhattan, and New Yorkers in general.
