Miss Juliet Shelby, one of the members of the Ugly Duckling trio, is fodder for snide remarks from the ton. She walks with a limp and all of the women of marriageable age have something mean and nasty to say about her. Her mother always pushes her into a corner so no one notices her. Lady Shelby refuses to allow her daughter any spotlight during the Season lest it embarrass her. She will not even let her play the piano for an audience just in case she draws to much attention to herself. Suddenly, Juliet's mother is all but pushing her down the aisle with some old artist, and Lord Deveril, most eligible and hottest bachelor of the ton, has stepped in and decides to teach her how to dance! My, my, my things are certainly getting interesting.

Lord Alec Deveril sees Juliet and it is not love at first sight. He just finds her interesting. Then when he begins to teach her how to dance, he feels the stirrings of attraction and not just in his lower regions. When her mentor and piano teacher goes missing he decides to play the gallant knight and help solve this dilemma. The closer they get to finding out the truth, the more they find they cannot live without each other. When a sinister murder plot is revealed and the reason why Julietís mother wants her to marry comes to light, things become terribly exciting.

How to Romance a Rake is a wonderful read. I had a good time reading this story. My favorite aspect of this story is the underdog perspective. You will find yourself routing for the nerdy girl to get the captain of the football team! So to speak.
