Cait London’s With Her Last Breath is a romantic suspense, but the ending had me wishing I had a box of tissues handy. Ms. London did a masterful job of blending the romance and suspense.
With Her Last Breath opens with Maggie Chantel running from her past. What Maggie never expected is that she was running straight into a future that she couldn’t mold. As she drives into Blanchefleur she sees a man running. She feels that man’s pain as if it were her own. When Maggie and her dog Scout decide to take a break on the beach Nick Alessandro sees her, and also feels a connection to her.
Nick is also struggling to come to terms with his past, and seems incapable of doing so. However the pull of Maggie is strong however and he finds an attraction to her that he hasn’t felt in the 12 years since his young wife’s death. Not only is Nick pulled to Maggie, but soon the entire town of Blanchefleur is falling under Maggie’s spell, and that of her beloved dog Scout.
With Her Last Breath is really Maggie’s story, but Ms. London has not shortchanged any of the characters she has introduced us to in the town of Blanchefleur. While Maggie and Nick are strong main characters they are also devoted in their own ways to the town, and don’t mind when the story seems to switch for a bit from them to the others in the town.
The ending of the story was emotional, and I think did wonders for Maggie’s emotional and physical healing from her past. It also helped Nick to understand Maggie in a better way, so that when they did end up together he wouldn’t hurt her new stronger spirit.
With Her Last Breath is the first book I’ve read by Cait London. It most certainly won’t be the last.
