Serena Carmichael must escape the clutches of her evil step father, General George Heyward. She watched as he layer by layer destroyed her mother, and she was determined to save an unsuspecting heiress from his greedy claws. Serena has had to fight and be strong for over ten years, maintaining a gambling hell and fighting off the advances of those whom the General felt he could sell her to. This life has taken its toll on her heart and mind. Worse yet, ten years ago she had to give up the love of her life to fulfill the wishes of her step-father. Now she is back in London and she has to save an innocent and face the heartbreak of the past.
The Honorable Sebastian Sullivan’s heart was broken ten years ago and he has gotten over it pretty good until heaven and hell walked through the new gambling hell he was visiting. Not only that, he is busy trying to fulfill the requirements of his uncle’s will by marrying a woman of ill-repute and rehabilitating her. Sebastian realizes he never healed from Serena coldly dismissing him. Then he finds out she is sacrificing her freedom to save one little innocent heiress. He knows he has to rescue her from her step-father or she will suffer dire consequences.
A Wedding Wager by Jane Feather is a good story. While it did not excite me, it was still enjoyable. Serena was a bit too self-sacrificing, but ultimately her character was strong and independent. I think what made this story good was the fact that Ms Feather addressed dark issues that both gave the story depth and added another dimension to the evil characters. I enjoyed this book, you will too.
