DJ Clayborne has a serious problem. As a member of the elite Paladins, DJ protects the barrier that separates earth from the world of Kalithia and the crazy “others” that try to cross over. When DJ does find spare time he’s the infamous hacker “Knightwalker” cyber sneaking in to big time corporations. Then DJ crosses a different kind of sword with another hacker and they dance around each other for months. The game takes a dangerous turn when his nemesis drops a bomb on DJ by hinting she knows about Paladins and Regents. UH OH, DJ better clean up this mess before his Paladin leader, Devlin Bane finds out!

Regina Morrison has been toying with Knightwalker for months. When he shows up at her door, Reggie can’t help but be in awe of this sexy badass dude. DJ issues a warning to Reggie she must not do anymore hacking into Paladin business. Too late, Reggie has been noticed by another, someone who is high up in the Regents and intends to use Reggie for his own devious purposes. DJ, wild with worry, crosses the barrier to rescue Reggie from The Darkness Beyond, where sinister others have kidnapped her. Can DJ get to her in time?

You can always count on a good read from Alexis Morgan’s red hot Paladin series, and the latest installment The Darkness Beyond doesn’t disappoint. However, I found the chemistry between Paladin DJ and hacker Reggie a bit forced. The rest of the action is good, and the supporting characters add depth. It’s always good to reconnect with old friends from previous books such as Devlin Bane, Trahern, Lonzo, Larem, Barak, and Laurel. I’m fascinated by Sworn Guardian Berk and his blade mates perhaps we will see more of them in future stories?
