Lisa Kleypas brings readers another Christmas story and also, the kick-off to her new contemporary romance series. Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor is a sweet and romantic holiday love story.
Mark Nolan has just been awarded custody for his niece, Holly, after her motherís death. Mark is a bachelor who has never really been involved in a childís life but that is all changing. He wants the best for Holly. Unfortunately, Holly isnít talking. Literally. But Mark, and his brother Sam, are hoping that will eventually change.
Maggie Conroy owns a toy store and is instantly charmed when Holly and Mark come in. She even gets Holly to talk with some special little girl magic. Mark notices her instantly, but there are complications aplenty, including the fact that Maggie has not moved on from her husbandís death. But with holiday magic in the air, anything is possible, and most certainly that most precious gift of all: love.
Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor is a short and pleasant read. I really wish it had been a bit longer in order to spend more time with Mark, Maggie, and Holly. As with any Christmas book, the romance has the quality of feeling somewhat rushed. However, Lisa Kleypas does a great job of bringing the San Juan islands to life and making Friday Harbor a memorable place to visit. While the characters are a bit flat, I still enjoyed the story. After all, this is Lisa Kleypas! It is nigh impossible for her to write bad romance.
I am excited to see where she goes with her Friday Harbor series. Here is hoping readers will get more glimpses of Mark and Maggie.
