Lady Ciara Sheffield longs for anonymity. Seeing her name in the morning paper sets her pulse to race as dread fills her being. When will her late husband's family give up? Surely they cannot continue to slander her in the press when the inquest cleared her of any suspicion in his death, can they? Just because she is well-known for her botanical studies into the medicinal properties of plants doesn't mean she poisoned her husband.
Things take a desperate turn when Ciara learns that the family plans to declare her an unfit mother, gain custody of her son and the family fortune (their real goal). She must take drastic action.
Fate presents her with an unlikely savior. Lucas Bingham, the Earl of Hadley, has come to her home on behalf of his uncle. The older gentleman has come into possession of an ancient manuscript and needs her help with the translation. Lucas has come to ask for her aid. As a well-known rake Lucas is not at all the kind of man Ciara is interested in, but desperate times require desperate action. She needs a powerful suitor to put the rumors to rest, so they forge a secret agreement.
The debut book of a new series, To Sin With a Scoundrel has all the elements historical romance readers love. A brilliant outspoken heroine, a bad-boy hero ripe for redemption, a little danger and a lot of passion give this book plenty of appeal. Author Cara Elliott writes a fine first novel for the Circle of Sin series. I am looking forward to the next installment.
