Genie Gatlin is a twenty-something singleton with a warped theory about love and dating. Her theory consists of her dating married men because they will remain emotionally detached.

Genie has been stuck in a rut with her catering business for so time and decides to change her career. She applies for a job at Whitman College and meets the perfect man. Dr. David Lewis has it all: respect from his colleagues, good looks, a nice bank account and a wife. The two start out as just friends soon one thing leads to another and an affair begins.

Author Patty Rice brings us a wonderful tale of love, infidelity, and discovering your true self. Naturally from the first page you think you are going to dislike Genie because she chooses to see married men. However as the novel progresses you start to feel sorry for her, and see how past situations have made her cynical towards all men until she meets David. David being an older gentleman teaches her things and makes Genie feel things she didn't even know she had inside her.

I considered David to be a real jerk cheating on his wife of twenty-six-years. I did however realize that something deeper was happening to him. He felt as though that only person that understood him was Genie. It was Genie in her own way how helped David realize the value of his family.

Somethin' Extra is Ms. Rice's second novel and after reading this one I will definitely get her first. I highly recommend not passing this one up.
