Athena Smith has the career opportunity of a lifetime at her fingertips. The wealthy and privileged Clayworth family has a collection of vintage haute couture gowns that will make the perfect exhibit at the Fashion Institute of Chicago. All Athena has to do is go to the secret holding location for the gowns and inspect them. Easy-peasy, right? It would be, except going anywhere that the Clayworths are involved means seeing the man who broke her heart years ago, Drew Clayworth.

Unfortunately, the collection investigation does not go as planned and Athena gets very sick from toxins from the old gowns. By the time she is healed, the gowns are missing? How did such an exciting project go so awry? When Drew and Athena form a tentative partnership to find the missing gowns, can they put the past behind them?

A Black Tie Affair is a pleasant love story. I liked seeing Athena and Drew work through their past even as the pressure was on to find the missing gowns. However, so much of the plot was focused on the toxins and finding the missing gowns that I donít think the author was able to examine the emotions of her characters quite as much as was needed. This is an exciting adventure nonetheless. I enjoyed the story and though I found the idea of dress toxins making one sick odd at storyís beginning, the author was able to convince me.

A Black Tie Affair is just witty enough and just sweet enough to forgive some of the problems in the book.
