Strong Spirits by Alice Duncan is classified as a historical romance by the publisher. I would say itís more a historical mystery.
Daisy Majesty married young, and her husband was soon shipped out to fight the Kaiser in WWI. He came home a much different man than the man who left. He is wheelchair bound, and unable to support the family. It is up to Daisy and her career as a spiritualist to support the extended family who lives in the bungalow on Marengo St.
Itís not too long before her best client Mrs. Kincaid calls her for a reading of the Tarot Cards. The cards much to Daisyís dismay predict awful times ahead, and try as she might to manipulate the cards Daisy can not change the outcome of what is yet to come for not only the Kincaid family, but their employees and herself as well.
Soon Detective Sam Rotondo enters the picture. He asks Daisy to keep her eyes and ears open for troubles in the Kincaidís business and personal life. Daisy is uncomfortable with this, but stumbles upon information she feels she must impart to the detective. Detective Rotondo and Daisy have minimal if any respect for each other, but they do manage to work together, and when they are together you can feel the angst jumping off the pages.
Ms. Duncan has written a book that keeps the readers attention. The plot twists in different ways, but is easy to follow. The conclusion of the book shows great strength in not only Daisy but in the unexpected persona of Mrs. Kincaid.
Strong Spirits is not the book to read if youíre looking for a lot of sex scenes, and chemistry between the characters. It is the book to read if youíre looking for an easy read where you can feel the characters have true feelings, be they good or bad for one another.
From what I can tell there is to be another book featuring Daisy Majesty and Detective Rotondo and I look forward to reading it.
