Jenny or “Madame Esmerelda” as her clients call her has a achieved the impossible for someone with no wealth or background. She has discovered a way to be a woman of her own means without having to bear the indignity of being some man’s mistress. For the past twelve years, she has been fortune telling for the rich, and made a pretty good living at it too.

She would have continued on peacefully plying her trade if Gareth, Lord Blakely had not tried to prove her to be a charlatan and a fraud. He so wanted to use scientific facts and statistics to prove that she was fake. They look into each other’s eyes and the reflection of their own loneliness draws them like a moth to a flame. These are two souls that have had to create facades to survive the perils of English society.

Proof by Seduction is full of twists and turns within a plot. This story does not stick with one path, but it is a story within a story. The different perspectives made this work richer and more enjoyable to read. Milan explores the subject of equality within the English caste system, and the idea debilitating effects of depression on a tormented mind. Milan also discusses the woman's need to be independent and not dependent on the riches of a man. Jenny's character was strength and femininity. She needed a hero but she was more than willing to try everything she could to save herself. Courtney Milan tells the story through many eyes not just through the eyes of one. It was fun to peel away at each layer of the story.
