Abducted by aliens, Dr. Tess Lockhart is thrust onto a planet where she is one of the main attractions. Forced into a zoo and fearing for her safety, she finds use in the role of zoo physician. When Tess and Arnie, a fellow human prisoner, make plans to escape, they are thwarted by the problem of an injured creature. As Tess nurses him back to health, she slowly falls in love with the virile, humanoid creature with wings.

As months pass, her feelings for Roan deepening, their only chance of survival is to escape. Once free of the zoo, they face numerous challenges to their relationship. Can love survive their differences?

Nightflyers is a pure revelation of a book. A real gem. From the opening paragraph, the story sucks you in and compels you to keep reading. Ms. Martensí world building is exquisite. Highly evocative, her planets are places completely different from earth, yet as a reader I never felt they were too unrealistic. When reading sci-fi I love authors who create different planets and species, but avoid heavy descriptive prose which takes away from the story Ė Ms. Martens is one such author. The plot is well paced and has enough twists and turns to keep the reader interested.

Despite the plot having a sci-fi base, the core of the story revolves around the characters; especially the romance between Tess and Roan. What can I say about these two except I adored them. Both from different species, thrown together on a foreign planet and scrambling to survive; circumstance throws them together, but love grows despite all the odds.

Nightflyers is a beautiful love story, proving that love doesnít have to be about hot sex, but passion, shared experiences, companionship and respect. Itís refreshing to read a story where love doesnít revolve around sex.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. Itís one of my favourites of the year. If you love romance and sci-fi, itís a must read!
