The title demands a second look – The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker – and invites curiosity. What does it mean? Who is Percy? What happens to her? As a reader, I know all too well that an unusual title or compelling blurb can reveal a lackluster novel within. Happily that is not the case for debut author Leanna Renee Hieber. She has given readers a romantic fantasy to relish.
When Percy Parker arrives at the Athens Academy, she hopes she is ready for life outside the convent walls that have been her home. She hopes that the academy can provide the knowledge she seeks to understand her unusual gifts. She hopes that she will make a few friends even though her unworldly appearance tends to keep others at a distance. Most of all, she wants to be treated just like anyone else.
Without giving away too much of the tale, Percy finds herself at the center of a maelstrom. The mortal world is under attack, and those who battle on the side of good must use every weapon at their disposal to keep the darkness at bay. Will her gifts aid in the fight? I am unwilling to say, other than to tell you that the plot kept me surprised and riveted to the final page. Ms. Hieber has brought together fantasy, romance and a splash of Gothic fiction to deliver a compelling tale of duty and isolation healed by the power of love.
