I love finding new authors. Picking up a book on a hunch and discovering treasure is such a thrill. That is how I stumbled upon Ilona Andrews and her great Magic series.
The debut novel, Magic Bites, introduces readers to Kate Daniels, a mercenary who specializes in magical solutions. She is a bit shabby and needs a better-paying gig. Post-apocalyptic Atlanta is not any cheaper, and the war between magic and technology makes things go awry at any moment. The death of her former guardian gives Kate both a job, and a mission. She is determined to find out what happened to Greg and the place to start is the Order of Merciful Aid, where Greg was a Knight-Diviner.
Kate has real issues with authority figures and rules, so she is surprised when the Order allows her to investigate under their aegis. She is a little suspicious of their cooperation, but it will open doors that the Mercenary's Guild cannot.
The possible suspects range from the Masters of the Dead who control vampires to the Pack, a paramilitary group of shapeshifters. Both sides claim innocence and blame the other side, not only for Greg's death but for other unexplained losses on both sides. Who is really behind all the attacks?
Ms. Andrews has created an interesting world and populated it with great characters. I was sorry to see the last page of Magic Bites and am glad I have the other two books in the series close at hand.
