Alysha Gale is very comfortable around magic. Being a Gale, she has to be. To call her aunts witches might be a bit inaccurate, but anything else is mere speculation. And those rumors about an ancient horned god who may have been their forefather? Well, once again it cannot be proved. Suffice it to say that the women in the Gale family tree have very powerful talent that manifests itself in interesting ways.

Recent events are unusually perturbing. Alysha's grandmother has disappeared. That in itself is not unusual, since she likes to forge her own path in life. But the letter that arrives has the family in an uproar. In it, Alysha has been named as inheritor of her grandmother's property in Calgary. If she is going to find out what happened to Gran, she is going to have to leave behind the security of her life in Ontario for the wilds of Alberta. Isn't it helpful that she just lost her job?

Author Tanya Huff, best known for her Blood series, takes readers on a magical mystical ride in The Enchantment Emporium. The Gale women are wonderfully magical in a very domestic sort of way. The older generation, known as the Aunties, are a hodge-podge of power that can either make a great pie, change the weather, or strike fear in the hearts of sorcerers everywhere. They are not convinced that Gran is dead, and allow Alysha to journey to Calgary alone. Well, she is never really alone with all the charms and enchanted cell phones.

Alysha finds that her inheritance is mainly a shop of “junk” known as The Enchantment Emporium. There is a leprechaun who helps out on occasion, a monkey's paw in the glass case, and a row of mailboxes for magical creatures. She also discovers that something strange is happening in Calgary, and it may a role in Gran's disappearance. She hopes she can get to the bottom of the mystery without calling for Auntie-backup.

This stand-alone urban fantasy has a little of everything. From romance and suspense to Celtic magic, readers will find plenty to appreciate. I hope Ms. Huff returns to the Gales soon!
