A charming three-year old girl sits patiently on the steps of a London gentleman's club. Unnerved by the sight, Lord Aidan Blankenship and Sir Colin Lambert attempt to discover the reason behind her arrival. When she informs them that her father is inside, they are relieved...until they realize that there are only three members who are young enough to be her father – the two of them, and their friend Jack.
Thus begins a charming and often amusing novel by Celeste Bradley. Watching these bachelors tie themselves in knots trying to wrangle one small girl is endlessly entertaining. Melody may be young, but she is full of curiosity and energy. Smuggling her into the club is one thing. Keeping her out of sight from staff is quite another. Finding her mother may be impossible.
Lord Aidan is convinced that Melody is his, sired during a brief affair with Madeleine Chandler. Madeleine knows she is not Melody's mother, but is in a desperate situation and plays along with the ruse. She quickly loses her heart to the lovely little girl, and the man she could never forget.
Devil in My Bed has some serious moments too. Madeleine is in grave danger and Aidan will have to get past her deception and take a heroic stand to save her. The story is the first book in Ms. Bradley's new series, Runaway Brides, and I am looking forward to the next installment.
