Sabin is bound by the demon of doubt. His life is tied to the battlefield rather than the bedroom, as this is the only way he can stop himself from unintentionally hurting his lovers. Doubt destroys his lover’s confidence with disastrous consequences. Love does not concern him. Until he meets Gwendolyn the Timid. All Sabin can think of when he’s with Gwen is just having one more taste...
Gwen, an immortal harpy, has a dark side of her own. She’s lived her life among humans hoping they would never arouse her darker side. But when Sabin rescues her from prison, he also unleashes the dark side she’s tried to keep hidden. Can the two immortals battle their demons and find love with each other?
Gena Showalter is back with this fourth novel in the Lords of the Underworld series. The Darkest Whisper brings the reader into the life of Sabin, Keeper of Doubt. I can’t imagine having a doubt demon sitting on my shoulder, questioning everything I do, but that is what the handsome leader of the Lords has to contend with. Until Gwen comes into his life.
I especially liked the fact Gwen was no ordinary heroine – she is a harpy. Showalter introduces numerous mythological characters in her series, but the harpies are a big favourite for me. The conflict between Gwen’s human side and dark side adds a dimension that allows her to understand Sabin’s demon.
Although various other Lords are mentioned in this novel, it’s the complex relationship between demon and harpy that drives the storyline. At certain points the pacing is slow and aside from the other Lords, detracts from the central plot.
Humorous, sassy and sexy, The Darkest Whisper continues Gena Showalter’s storm into the world of paranormal romance.
