Ellen is a newlywed and happily married for a year. She loves her husband, Andy, and the life they are creating together. It seems nothing can change those feelings; however, when Ellen catches just one small glimpse of her ex-boyfriend, Leo, her world shifts on its axis. Leo was always the man she thought would be “The One”. He broke her heart and changed her forever. But seeing him again, just that one glimpse, changes her yet again. Suddenly, one glimpse is not enough, and suddenly, the calm and happy life she is building with Andy seems mundane and too simple.

But Ellen has a good life. She would not throw it away for another chance with her old love. As emotions grow and the past and present collide, Ellen has a tough choice to make.

Emily Giffin does not give her characters easy decisions to face. Such is the case with Ellen. She loves her husband, but it has never necessarily been the all-consuming, all crazy love she had with Leo. That is not a bad thing, but it is a difference she cannot help but notice. This reader could not help but sympathize with Andy, even while noticing the mistakes he made. Ellen is far from perfect and as this situation continues she realizes her “perfect” marriage is anything but.

Love the One You’re With forces Ellen to make a choice about her future. Emily Giffin does a good job of showing all sides of this complex situation, even while I could not help hoping for a positive outcome for Ellen and Andy.
